What the critics say
FB St Clair, Opera News, October, 1992
A buoyant Le Nozze di Figaro (March 21) by Vancouver Opera gave special pleasure with a well-balanced, youthful cast. The athletic, incisively sung Figaro of Gerald Finley and piquantly charming Susanna of Dominique Labelle stood out, though the Countess of Adrianne Pieczonka (with her slightly edgy soprano), emphatic Count of David Malis and boyishly gangling Cherubino of Norine Burgess proved scarcely less effective. Veterans Joseph Rouleau as Dr. Bartolo and Patricia Kern as Marcellina combined dramatic purpose with still convincing vocal command, while Li-Ping Zhang made a delightful Barbarina.
Director Michael McCaffery gave the right comic focus for the large Queen Elizabeth Theatre; the modestly attractive pastel sets by Susan Benson, though made for the small Banff Centre stage, had the advantage of giving physical concentration to McCaffery's swirling stage action. Conductor Derrick Inouyue, already embarked on a successful career in Germany, opted for more drive than nuance here but must be given credit for the gracefully turned appoggiaturas as an extra distinction in the lively evening.
