This staging is conceived as a replica of the legendary production that opened in the Estates Theatre on 7 February 1969, which was the work of two outstanding Czech operatic artists: stage director Václav Kašlík and set designer Josef Svoboda. The production remained in the repertoire with only a short break until 1983, when the Estates Theatre was closed for renovation. The stage treatment, which works with elements of the seating area of the Estates Theatre and has the proscenium loges continue onto the stage as the principal element in the decorations, highlights beautifully the fact that this theatre was the site of the world premiere of this ‘opera of operas’–the theatre where it sounded on 29 October 1787 under the baton of the composer himself. Our reconstructed staging is enriched with new costumes by the world-renowned designer Theodor Pištěk
